Devin K. Binder, M.D., PhD

Dr. Devin K. Bindbinderder grew up in Berkeley, California. He attended Harvard University, majoring in Biological Anthropology, and he was awarded the prestigious Hoopes Prize for his summa cum laude senior honors thesis “Serotonin and behavioral state.” Aspiring to pursue both neuroscience and clinical medicine, he enrolled in the M.D./Ph.D. program at Duke University, graduating in 1999 with combined M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. While at Duke, he decided on a career in clinical neurosurgery and research. Between 1999 and 2005, Dr. Binder completed a surgical internship and neurosurgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco, the top neurosurgery training program in California, where he continued to earn clinical and research awards. Following residency, he won the prestigious Van Wagenen international traveling fellowship from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons to go to Germany for a one-year epilepsy surgery fellowship at the University of Bonn. From 2006-2009, Dr. Binder served as director of the epilepsy and functional neurosurgery service at UCI. At UCI he was honored with several awards, including the Research Associates Dean’s junior physician-scientist award, the Gold Star award from the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and the medical student Excellence in Teaching award. In January 2010, Dr. Binder joined the University of California, Riverside and continued to expand his neurosurgery practice in Orange County.

Dr. Binder is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Epilepsy Society, and the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. His clinical expertise includes general neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery, deep brain stimulation (DBS) and functional neurosurgery, spine surgery, and brain tumor surgery. Dr. Binder is particularly excited to offer DBS treatment to many patients in southern California for treatment of movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and dystonia. Dr. Binder believes strongly in providing a customized approach to each patient, using the services of a multidisciplinary treatment team.
