The NSTA is hosting a SoCal Regional Conference on Saturday, March 25, 2017. The conference will take place at the Long Beach Marriott, 4700 Airport Plaza Drive, Long Beach, California 90815. Registration for the conference is FREE thanks to our sponsors.
The conference will begin at 9:00 am which will give people in the surrounding area enough time to drive in. Parking for conference attendees is complimentary. The day will begin with a two hour support group meeting. One group will consist of people who have been diagnosed with ST. The other group will consist of the family, friends and care takers of the person who has ST. The group meeting for people diagnosed with cervical dystonia will be moderated by Allison Smith, M.A., a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Wellness Life Coach.
The groups will focus on issues and concerns about coping with ST and there will be a chance for everyone to talk, share their story, listen to others and learn. After the group sessions, there will be an hour, thirty minute lunch where people can get to know each other.
We will resume in Salon EF for the presentations by our guest speakers. Topics will include the latest treatment options. Dr. Karen P. Frei, from Loma Linda University and also serves as Medical Editor of the ST Quarterly will be there. Dr. Melita Petrossian from Santa Monica St. Johns will present as well.
Judy Yoon, diagnosed with cervical dystonia will be present on her journey. She is also the Seattle Dystonia Support group leader for the DMRF.
Dr. Gary Demerjian, is one of the relatively few dentists that specialize in Temporo Mandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders. The TMJ is the joint that forms the hinge on which the jaw pivots. TMJ dentists like Dr. Demerjian have, surprisingly, found that treating TMJ disorders often treats seemingly unrelated neurological disorders. He has spoken at several of our Symposia and Support Group meetings. The treatment does not cure the condition, nor will it fully relieve symptoms, but when it works it has a very welcome result. Those who have the splints wear them nearly continuously to help minimize ST muscle spasms throughout the day.
Dr. Demerjian introduced us to two other TMJ specialists that treat ST (among other TMJ-triggered disorders). These were Drs. Brendan Stack and Anthony Sims, both practicing in the Washington, DC area. Both of these gentlemen have attended our Symposiums to describe the treatment and test patients. These three dentists (and perhaps a few others that we do not know well) have been researching and treating patients for over 20 years and have accumulated a great deal of experience. There will be a questions and answers panel afterwards.
